– 2 slices of white or sourdough bread – 2 tbsp butter (softened) – 2 slices of cheddar cheese (or American cheese) – Optional: garlic powder, tomato slices, or pickles
– Spread butter evenly on one side of each bread slice. Make sure it’s soft enough to spread but not melted to avoid tearing the bread.
Place one slice of bread, butter side down, onto a skillet or pan. Layer with two slices of your favorite cheese like cheddar or American
Top with the second slice of bread, butter side facing up. Press gently to keep everything in place but don’t squash the sandwich flat.
Heat a skillet over medium heat. Once hot, carefully place the sandwich in the pan and cook for 2–3 minutes or until the bottom is golden.
Flip the sandwich carefully with a spatula. Cook the other side for another 2–3 minutes until golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.
Remove from the pan and let it sit for 1 minute. This helps the cheese set slightly and avoids burning your mouth on hot melted cheese.
1. Slice the sandwich diagonally or in halves. Serve hot with tomato soup, pickles, or chips for a complete classic comfort meal.
